What Flew Over Western Washington State On Friday Night, May 22?

On the evening of Friday May 22, a large glowing object(s) flew at low altitudes over Washington state. There were at least 4 postings about these sightings to MUFON.com in the days that followed, and they may concern the same object.

All 4 reports refer to the evening of May 22, 2009.

From southwest Washington, north of Portland, Oregon:

“I stepped outside of the restaurant where I had just eaten dinner and looked up into the sky. At about 40 degress above the western horizon I saw a brilliant white light. . . . It was moving in a west to east direction. . . . My friend suggested that maybe it was the space station, or a satellite, both of which I have seen through binoculars in the past. This object was far, far, too large to be either of those. It appeared to be about equal to 1/3 the diameter of a U.S. dime held at arm's length. It traveled silently from about 40 or 50 degrees above the west horizon, to about 50-60 degrees above the eastern horizon, and then, it instantly disappeared!” The observer stated they thought they saw a brownish, thin ‘trail’ after the light went off.

“I also would mention, that during the 2-3 minutes of this observation, there were aircraft approaching the nearby Portland International Airport and in holding patters with external lights and landing lights on. This object was clearly NOT an approaching nor a landing aircraft.”

From a suburb east of Seattle:

This observer was in his backyard with a friend, who alerted him of an object, at what he thought was about 10:15 PM:

“I turned around (facing west towards lake washington) and a very bright oval/sphere object about the size of a dime in the sky moved from behind and a above a row of trees about 100 to 125 yards from our position. . . . It stayed in plain sight above the tree line . . .”.

The observer stated he felt the object’s altitude was very low.

“it moved west to east in a slow up and down undulating motion . . .. As i took up another clear view it suddenly dimmed itself out into an ever smaller ring that went from the brightest white light i have ever seen to an orangish brown ring the size of what i can only describe as a needle point. . . . I have never seen something so big , so low and SO QUIET.”

From an unknown Washington state location:

“Myself and four of my friends were walking out to our cars when I looked up in the sky to the west and saw a VERY BRIGHT light moving. It had no flashing lights like an airplane would have an the light coming from it was too bright to be any aircraft that I know of. It was heading in a West to East direction. It had to be rather large judging from the size of the lighted area. We were able to see it all the way until it started to make a very sharp turn and then the light all the sudden went off. This was NO meteor, no aircraft that any of us were familiar with, it made no noise at all. Within seconds there was two other airplanes right in the area where this light had disappeared. This was definitely a craft of some sorts . . .”.

This observer also mentioned a previous report of a similar object.

Finally, a report from Lewis County, which is on I-5 in western Washington, about halfway between Seattle and Portland, OR:

“On May 22, 2009 at 10:38 PM in Centralia, WA we saw a very bright oval object appear on our west horizon line, traveling W-E at a steady pace at what appeared to be approximately 3000 to 4000 feet in the air. It passed our home making no sound at all and then it appeared to slow down as it approchaed a hill, then faded (started dimming) to a pale yellow then extinguished, as if one was blowing out a candel. This entire event took place in five minutes. We looked at it through very high powered binnoculars and looked for strobbing lights, red lights, a comet tail, fire, anything to explain that it was an aircraft, sattalite, meteor, etc.....it had none of these discriptives. It was nothing like we have seen before.”

“When we noticed the object we were in our back yard, putting away our telescope when we noticed the object thinking it was a very low flying plane. I ran for the binnoculars and was able to capture it in the view finder. No distinguishable shape other than the oval light. No blinking lights, no colored lights and no sound. We were trying to figure out what it was, and then it simply disappeared before our eyes, prior to the hill it was approaching. . . .  Then we saw it "blow out" and couldn't see the object any further.”

In several years of reading just about every report submitted to MUFON.com, it is unusual to have 4 detailed reports from the same time frame describing such a similar object.

I have seen the International Space Station traverse the sky. The ISS went overhead through a clear night at about a 75 degree angle. It was a speck of light just barely visible to the naked eye.

Earlier in the day of May 22, 2009, from the kitchen of a home overlooking the capitol city of Brazil:

A huge gray cigar shap object over Sobradinho, DF {Federal District}’

“I was having my breakfast. . . .  The sky was clean without clouds. The sun was shinning. Suddenly a bright flash caught my attention. I looked outside and saw a huge, I mean, very huge, cigar shape object. It was gray, a polish gray, shinny. I could estimate the size because the TV tower that is 23 km {14 miles} distant from me and it has 35m {118 feet} high. The object, I calculate, had aprox. 30m long. It was hovering for 10 minutes until in a amazing speed shhot off to the sky!”

“I know that at least 5 more people saw it because I could see those people looking to the sky.”

It is a common reaction to note that others also witnessed an unexplainable sighting. When I saw my first UFO, a low-flying, roaring, round ‘fireball’, at least 10 feet in diameter, in a slow, level flight in the middle of a summer afternoon, my first thought, after it passed overhead, was “at least those people I hear talking at the golf course next door will see it too!”
